The Newton Housing Authority's Resident Services Coordinator identifies the needs of our residents throughout our housing developments.
Through yearly fund raising efforts, many programs and opportunities are offered on-site in the community rooms of our developments. This enables all of our residents the opportunity to participate. These programs also accommodate our elderly and shut-in residents so they may enjoy andpartake in these programs.
Each month, a four-page calendar is distributed to each of the developments and reaches all residents. The calendar informs our residents of programs and opportunities in their developments as well as throughout the City of Newton. Through the generous donation of the Village Bank, the printing cost has been defrayed for the past six years.
Citizenship classes are offered on-site at the Jackson Gardens and Horace Mann Developments. English lessons are offered at Norumbega Gardens, Horace Mann, and Parker House each week. We are pleased with the resident's active participation in these classes.
Tenant Organization meetings are held monthly in each development. These meetings help identify the needs of our residents and provide direct, on-site social services and recreational programs. Blood pressure clinics are offered at these meetings.
We encourage special celebrations at our developments which take place throughout the year. We have held Pizza parties in September, a December Holiday dinner, a St. Patrick's day dinner in March, and a June barbecue. All of these special events offer musical entertainment, door prizes, and a small gift for all in December.
Ceramic classes are offered to all residents and are held at Jackson Gardens each Saturday from 10am to 12pm.
All of these programs are possible as a result of our continuing fund raising activities each year. This past year, nearly $10,000 was raised and allows us to continue to support our active programs.
Our outreach services program established by our Resident Services Coordinator, enables our residents to maintain their independence in their apartments as a result of on-site support services.
