HUD Sponsored Programs
One bedroom housing developments available under this program include Parker House, Jackson Gardens, Horace Mann, and Norumbega Gardens. These developments contain a total of 222, one bedroom units, plus four, 2 bedroom apartments. To qualify for this program, you must be a senior, disabled/handicapped, or a single person who is income eligible. The waiting time to receive an apartment under this program is approximately 3-5 years.
Applicants will be offered an apartment at the location where the vacancy exists at the time their name reaches the top of the waiting list. Applicants are not permitted to choose the location.
State Sponsored Programs
Senior/disabled one bedroom housing developments available under this program include Echo Ridge, Nonantum Village, Centenary Village, and New Hyde Apartments. To qualify for this program, you must be income eligible, over the age of 60, or disabled/handicapped. The waiting time for this program is approximately 3-5 years.
Applicants will be offered an apartment at the location where the vacancy exists at the time their name reaches the top of the waiting list. Applicants are not permitted to choose the location.
Rent Subsidy Programs
Section 8 Programs. The Newton Housing Authority operates a Section 8 Rental Subsidy Program which allows assistance in private market housing. This is a Federal program through which vouchers are utilized in assisting tenants in paying their rent in apartments which they have located. Due to the length of the waiting list for this program, the application process is currently closed. The Newton Housing Authority will publicly advertise prior to re-opening this waiting list.
YMCA Section 8 Project-Based Single Housing Program for Single Homeless Men is currently open and is accepting applications. There are 25 units in this facility that are subsidized under the Section 8 Program. The waiting period for a room at the YMCA is approximately six months to one year, depending upon vacancies.
Section 8 Victims of Domestic Violence Program is a program designed for families who are in Domestic Violence situations.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts Chapter 689 Program
Chapter 689 Program. The Newton Housing Authority is the owner of two properties funded by the Commonwealth of Mass. Dept. of Housing and Community Development. These properties are leased to vendors who operate residential programs for special needs clients.
